October 12, 2010: "Superman Day" to Celebrate Release of Superman #703

Superman fans in the Cincinnati, OH area will have the opportunity to meet the Man of Steel at the "Up, Up and Away" comic book store in Cheviot this Wednesday as part of "Superman Day".

The celebration is the brainchild of Cheviot Mayor Samuel Keller and coincides with the release of Superman #703. In the issue, Superman visits Cincinnati as his third stop on a walking tour of the nation in a storyline entitled "Grounded."

The event was originally scheduled for September 15th but postponed after DC Comics delayed the issue until October 13th. A costumed Superman will be signing copies of the issue from 11am to 1pm and from 4pm to 6pm at the store located at 4016 Harrison Ave.

An early review of Superman #703 by Cincinnati.com indicates that Cincinnati plays a much smaller role in the issue than some had expected.

The Man of Steel is in the city for only four pages of the 32-page issue talking to Batman on the roof of an unidentified downtown building. Area landmarks are featured however such as a barge on the Ohio River, the John A. Roebling Suspension Bridge and a view of the skyline that includes the PNC Bank building, the Scripps Center and the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center.

Neither DC Comics co-publisher Dan DiDio or writer J. Michael Straczynski were available for interviews at the recent New York Comic Con so it is unclear why Cincinnati's role in the issue is limited.
