Artist Kristen Cumings was a featured guest at the Jelly Belly booth at the recent New York Comic Con where she created a portrait of Superman made entirely out of the classic jelly bean candies.

Cumings has created portraits of such characters as Batman, Wonder Woman and Yoda in the past and worked on her 20-square-foot picture of the Man of Steel over the course of the four-day event using approximately 12,000 jelly beans.

"Instead of using paint, where you’re able to physically mix the two colors together," stated Cumings in an interview with Food & Wine. "It's like pixels where you put them next to each other and when you stand back they blend to make the different color."

Roughly 22 colors and flavors of Jelly Belly were used to create the Superman portrait including:

  • Blues: Blueberry, Jewel Blueberry, Island Punch, Jewel Berry Blue
  • Reds: Doctor Pepper, Strawberry Jam, Sour Cherry, Red Apple, Bubblegum, Cotton Candy, Strawberry Daiquiri
  • Flesh tones: Bubble Gum, Pink Grapefruit, Strawberry Cheesecake, Beer, Jewel Ginger Ale, Sausage, Maple Syrup, Toasted Marshmallow, Coconut
  • Yellow: Sunkissed Lemon or Crushed Pineapple
  • Blacks: Licorice, Wild Blackberry
  • Once Cumings completed her impressive artwork, the Superman portrait was covered in a resin epoxy to preserve it for many years to come.
