September 16, 2014: Memorial Superman Statue of Murder Victim Nearing Completion

Posted by Neil Cole

The memorial bronze Superman statue of 5-year-old Toronto murder victim, Jeffrey Baldwin is nearing completion and will be officially unveiled on October 18, 2014.

The statue features Baldwin - who was starved, beaten and ultimately murdered by his grandparents in 2002 - dressed as the Man of Steel. DC Entertainment initially refused to allow the inclusion of the iconic "S" shield on the sculpture but, following a public outcry, the decision was ultimately reversed.

"I am grateful to DC for allowing Jeffrey's statue to display the iconic Superman S-shield," stated memorial organizer Todd Boyce in an interview with THR. "The amount of affection shown for Jeffrey from people around the world has been extremely heartwarming.

Hopefully Jeffrey's statue will act as a reminder to adults of their responsibility to report a suspected case of abuse, possibly saving the life of another vulnerable child."

The statue will be located in Toronto's Greenwood Park and will include a park bench inscribed with messages to Jeffrey from those who contributed funds to the memorial project.
