July 10, 2012: Rare Superman Memorabilia Heads to Auction

As part of their 206th auction which takes place July 17-19, 2012, Hake's Americana and Collectibles in York, PA is offerring another assortment of rare Superman collectibles and memorabilia from the 1940's, 50's, 60's and 70's. Some of the featured items are:

SCARCE SUPERMAN BROWN & RED VARIETY PROMOTIONAL FIGURE - 5.5" tall wood composition figure was designed by legendary Superman artist Wayne Boring to promote Superman to DC Comics’ distributors and retailers. 1942. This is brown and red version. Also produced as a fully-painted version. Both are rare and desirable. Professional repair at ankles. Paint is a perfect match. Trace of wear to raised portions of hair, but figure still displays Exc. Nicely detailed. This example was acquired in the early 1980s from a Superman collection assembled in the 1960s. Listed in the "Official Price Guide To Pop Culture Memorabilia – 150 Years Of Character Toys & Collectibles" at values of $1,800 in Fine, $3,600 in NM.

RARE SUPERMAN SECRET CHAMBER RING - Ring is from 1941, produced by Ostby & Barton of Rhode Island, offered as a premium for the “Superman Defense Club” milk program, costing 2 bottlecaps and 10¢. Hake’s Pop Culture Memorabilia 2008 Price Guide reports only 10 known: 4-Good, 5-Fine, 1-VF. In comparison, the related ring from the same promotion with a letter and eyeball on top has 27 reported known. This Superman on ring top version has sides showing a star and planet. Snap-off brass top has letter “S,” diagonal lightning bolt and well-struck image of Superman from waist up breaking a chain across his chest with image surrounded by accent lines. The ring bands are perfectly formed. Ring base has about 50% in clean brass tone and 50% still with original luster. The ring top retains over 90% luster and displays glossy and Mint. Overall, we grade VF and that places it among the best three known to us. The ring displays beautifully. Our last example in somewhat lesser condition exceeded $4,500.00.

RARE "SUPERMAN SILENT FLAME TABLE LIGHTER BY DUNHILL - Early 1940s battery operated lighter has overall size of 3x3x4.5" tall. Bakelite plastic base w/attached solid cast-metal Superman figure which itself is 3" tall. Raised "Superman" name at base of figure. Complete w/pull-out cylindrical flame unit. Battery box interior complete and clean and lighter is in perfect working order. Complete w/underside panel featuring company information. Slightest trace of wear, w/full, bright silver luster on Superman figure. Exc. A very rare Superman item, only the second we've ever offered in our 46 years. The other (in lesser condition) sold for $3,162.
