June 22, 2016: Cleveland Library to House Massive Superman Collection as Permanent Exhibit

Posted by Neil Cole

A collection of over 17,000 pieces of Superman collectibles and memorabilia spanning the iconic character's 78-year-history will soon be on permanent display at the Cleveland, Ohio Public Library.

The collection was donated to the library by superfan Mike Curtis - who also serves as writer of the syndicated Dick Tracy comic strip - and features various toys, games, dolls, and costumes including part of one worn by George Reeves on the 1957 epsiode of "I Love Lucy" entitled ""Lucy and Superman".

"There is a lot here," stated Amy Dawson, manager of the library's literature department. "We will apply for a grant to get money so we can preserve and restore the pieces. There are some valuable pieces here that people will want to look at.

"We will only be able to show portions of the collection at a time, and we will rotate it to keep it fresh," added Dawson. "If there are other collectors out there who wish to loan us an item for a while, we would be happy to display it."

A selection of items from the collection will be displayed this November to give visitors a preview of what the full display will look like when it is fully unveiled in 2017.

In addition to the Superman exhibit, the library also has a Siegel & Shuster Reading Room in honor of the Superman co-creators, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster who frequented the library on a regular basis in the 1930s.
