The 34th Annual Superman Celebration officially kicked off in Metropolis, IL earlier today with a wonderful opening ceremony and skit (featured below) with appearances by Superman, Shazam, Black Atom, Perry White and Lois Lane.
A memorable highlight of the ceremony was the raising of an American Flag over the Superman Statue which originally flew over Guantanamo Bay.
The flag was sent to Metropolis by Superman fan Ty Bjourson who is a regular attendee of the Superman Celebration but was unable to attend this year due to a current military deployment as part of a joint task force.
Following the ceremony was the presentation of the Lois Lane and Helping Hands awards at the Metro Tent. Fans were then treated to an evening of Gospel music entertainment performed by Mike Hardison & Friends.
The "Super Friends Meet, Greet, Eat & Bowl" was up next at Bob's Bowling Alley and many celebration attendees turned out for the popular event which also featured a fundraiser benefiting a local family.
The evening wrapped up with a couple of events for all ages including Kids Karaoke at the Smallville Tent and and outdoor theater screening of "Superman: The Movie."
Check in tomorrow evening for a full recap of our coverage of the second day of the 34th Annual Superman Celebration.
