May 21, 2015: "Convergence - Adventures of Superman #2" Review

Posted by Neil Cole

DC Comics has generously provided the Superman Super Site with review copies of Superman related titles currently featuring the publisher's groundbreaking 'Convergence' storyline.

In this review, we look at 'Convergence - Adventures of Superman #2' which features a story written by Marv Wolfman and artwork by Roberto Viacava, Andy Owens, and Sotocolor.

The issue kicks off where the series left off in 'Convergence - Adventures of Superman #1' with the Earth-1 versions of Superman and Supergirl trapped in the Phantom Zone fighting for their lives against a hoard of imprisoned Kryptonian villains.

Kara is ultimately pulled out of the Phantom Zone by Lucius and can do nothing but watch as the Kryptonian villains begin to get the upper hand over Superman with a barrage of punches and kicks.

Meanwhile, the Earth A.D. Apes from the Great Disaster that appeared in the prior issue are gathering under General Symian to eradicate the humans. However, he receives competition from none other than the Last Boy on Earth, Kamandi.

Back in the lab, Supergirl refuses to give up on Superman and, using her x-ray vision, spots and utilizes a grapling hook from the Batmobile to snag the Man of Steel and pull him to freedom.

Reunited, the two join Kamandi in his fight against General Symian and the ape army. Due to Kara's prior vision in the Phantom Zone of the future and her untimely death, she throws herself headlong into the fight; willing to do anything to protect Superman.

The issues concludes with Kara and Superman looking over an earthquake ravaged landscape after defeating the apes and taking out their "ultimate weapon", a nuclear warhead rocket.

Marv Wolfman continues to put together a great storyline for 'Convergence - Adventures of Superman #2' and developing the pre-Crisis versions of both Superman and Supergirl. The chemistry between these iconic characters and the introduction of Kamandi only adds to the reader's enjoyment.

The artwork provided by Roberto Viacava, Andy Owens, and Sotocolor is once again truly epic and continues the old-fashioned style of the pre-Crisis time period. However, as opposed to the previous issue which set the proper mood for each scene while also throwing in a few excellent splash pages, this issue is a bit lacking and contains backgrounds that are a bit too sparse.

All-in-all, 'Convergence - Adventures of Superman #2' is yet another a great addition to DC's groundbreaking storyline.
