February 27, 2015: Vintage Superman Collectibles Head to Auction

Posted by Neil Cole

As part of their 214th auction, Hake's Americana and Collectibles in York, PA is offerring another assortment of vintage Superman collectibles and memorabilia from the 1940's, 50's, 60's and 70's. Here are some of the featured items and descriptions:

SUPERMAN ORIGINAL PEP PIN ART
5.75x5.75" thin artboard has original bw pen and ink artwork w/image area measuring 2-1/8x2-1/8" and art has "D.C. Inc" copyright paste-over while name right of image has been hand-lettered. Production notations below art indicate that copyright strip was incorrect but appears to have been corrected according to information in notes. Top also has some sizing production notes in pencil. Artboard has scattered small spots of staining. Fine overall, but art is Exc. In addition to artboard, there is a separate 5.75" square sheet of onionskin paper w/red/fleshtone colors which, when placed over the bw art, provides the colors for the finished button. This has production note noting that red color should be blue and Superman's "Scarf" should be red. This sheet has been mounted to acetate sheet w/double-sided tape. Paper has quite a few thin ripple lines but these do not detract greatly. Comes w/example button w/blue version w/corrected D.C. Inc. copyright. Art is unique. 86 Pep pins were produced in this set and this is far and away the best to have the original art for. All vintage Superman merchandise art is extremely rare and highly sought after. A truly unique piece for the Superman collector.

"ATOM MAN VS. SUPERMAN" LINEN-MOUNTED THREE-SHEET MOVIE POSTER
41x77.75" three-sheet poster for original release of the 1950 Republic 15-Chapter film serial which starred Kirk Alyn in the titular role of Superman (and Clark Kent), Noel Neill as Lois Lane and Lyle Talbot as Lex Luthor/The Atom Man. Nice graphics include large image of Superman flying towards the Atom Man as Atom Man shoots rays at him from bottom portion of poster. Lex Luthor in his laboratory is also seen. Poster features three additional smaller images of Superman, one w/Lois Lane, one fighting Lex Luthor and one of Superman punching. Poster was issued in two pieces, w/top third being slightly off-center as printed, but graphics/text line up. This top third is more moderately but evenly aged. Poster has horizontal and vertical folds as issued w/scattered color touch-ups along fold lines/fold intersections. These touch-ups blend for the most part (most noticeable on red areas of Superman's boots/cape and to title), but faces and other main images are mostly unaffected. Margin edges show wear w/restoration. Technically VG, but still makes for nice display w/bright, bold color. Rare.

"IDEAL OFFICIAL BATMAN & JUSTICE LEAGUE OF AMERICA PLAY SET" BOX
15.5x27x7" deep illustrated cardboard display box originally contained set manufactured by Ideal, ©1966 NPP. Set included "Authentic Hand Painted Figures" of Batman, Robin, Superman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Flash, The Joker, The Key, Mouse Man, Kaltor, Brainstorm and Thunderbolt as well as "Sanctuary Mountain, Periscope, Weather Vane Key, Reflector Ray Weapon, Console, Robot" accessories. Set also included a free-wheeling Batmobile, Bat Plane and launcher. While none of the pieces of the set are included, the box remains in choice condition, having been stored in optimal conditions over the years. Showing just the slightest trace of corner tip wear in the form of some minor color rubs and lt. trace of aging to box bottom, box displays Exc. and would serve as the ultimate starting point to putting together a high grade example of this classic 1960s playset. All other pieces from this playset can be obtained individually but this rare box never comes up for sale in this condition.
