Actress Laura Benanti has been cast in the role of Supergirl's birth mother, Alura Zor-El in the upcoming CBS TV series based on the iconic superheroine.
A strong noblewoman, Alura sends Kara to Earth to escape Krypton’s destruction. Her wisdom and guidance echoes across space and time, proving invaluable on Kara’s journey toward becoming Supergirl.
Benanti is has previously starred in such TV series as "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit," "Royal Pains," and "The Good Wife." She currently stars in the role of Sadie Stone on the ABC musical drama series "Nashville."
Benanti will co-star alongside actress Melissa Benoist in the lead role of Kara Zor-El/Supergirl and Mehcad Brooks as Jimmy Olsen.
"Supergirl" will focus on Kara Zor-El who, born on the planet Krypton, escaped amid its destruction years ago. And since arriving on Earth, she's been hiding the powers she shares with her famous cousin. But now at age 24, she decides to embrace her superhuman abilities and be the hero she was always meant to be.
The series will be executively-produced & written by "Arrow" and "Flash" executive producer Greg Berlanti and "New Normal's" Ali Adler along with Sarah Schechter.
The series will be the fifth based on a DC Comics character currently airing on television including "Gotham" (FOX), "The Flash" (CW Network), "Arrow" (CW Network), and "Constantine" (NBC).
